A lovely surprise to win the major prize at the 2023 Outback Archies. This year the theme was ‘Legends and Landscapes’ and my entry was a painting called Min Min Lights in the Pilliga.
ARTIST STATEMENT //
There are many stories and legends about Min Min lights in the Pilliga Forest. A mysterious phenomenon, these atmospheric floating lights dance through the trees and are said to follow people as they travel through the scrub. I like to think that they are the spirits of the elders, watching over and protecting the Pilliga.
This vast ancient forest covers 50,000 hectares and is recognised as one of eastern Australia’s most important areas of biodiversity. Now more than ever, it needs protection from exploitation from coal seam gas projects recently green-lighted for development.
